SHREVEPORT, La. -- Centenary (22-26) fell to No. 1-seeded Western Illinois (23-21), 1-0, in the first game of the 2007 Mid-Continent Conference Softball Championships at the Centenary Softball Complex.

Playing as the No. 4 seed, Centenary held the Westerwinds at bay for most of the seven-inning game.

What decided the game was a Lauren Furgala single in the fifth, scoring Rachel Sinks from third and registering the lone run for Western Illinois. Furgala’s single got past a diving Emerald Doria (San Antonio) at short to score Sinks and the game-winning run.

The Ladies had their opportunity to tie the game the following inning when Doria led off the inning with a walk, sacrificed to second by Lauren Flowers (San Antonio). Unfortunately for Centenary, Doria was stranded at second after freshman Allison Shepperd (Marshall, Texas) flied out to left and senior Micah Rhodes (Grapevine, Texas) struck out to end the inning.

Western Illinois sophomore Kamren Ferguson pitched seven innings to earn the win, allowing two hits and striking out seven. Ferguson was named 2007 Mid-Con Pitcher of the Year Thursday, moving her record to 15-6 this season with Friday’s 1-0 victory.

Centenary faces the loser of Southern Utah/Oakland at 4 p.m. Friday at the Centenary Softball Complex, needing a win to stay alive in the double elimination tournament.
