Matt Webb hit a two-run homer
to give Centenary a 2-1 lead

TULSA, Okla. -- A two-run home run by junior catcher David Genao in the eighth led Oral Roberts (31-15, 13-1) to a 3-2 win over the Centenary baseball team (23-28, 6-10) in the series finale at Johnson Stadium Sunday. With the win, ORU completed a four-game series sweep of the Gents.

Trailing 2-1 with one out in the eighth, Genao took a 1-2 fastball by Centenary freshman Dakota Robinson (Bossier City) over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season. Genao picked the most opportune time to collect his first hit of the game, going 1-for-4 Sunday, with Eric Mattison also scoring on the play.

In the ninth, Golden Eagles’ senior closer Eric Crichton made short work of the Centenary batters, inducing a groundout to short by Centenary senior Matt Webb (Blue Springs, Mo.) to end the game and pick up his third win of the season. Crichton, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth, registered 1 2/3 innings of no-hit ball.

After Oral Roberts took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a Brendan Duffy RBI-single to left, Centenary used a two-run fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead on the Mid-Con leaders.

Centenary senior Justin Darr (The Woodlands, Texas) led off the fifth with a single to center, followed by a two-run homer by Webb to left. On a 1-0 pitch by ORU starter Chris Ashman, Webb drove the ball over the left-field wall for his team-leading sixth home run of the year, giving the Gents the much sought after lead.

Webb finished the game going 1-for-4 from the plate with two RBI.

Robinson, who relieved Gent starter Johnny Noland (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) with two on and two outs in the fourth, was steady in his 4 1/3 innings pitched.

With the pressure on and runners at first and second in the fourth, Robinson forced a groundout by ORU infielder Jake Kahaulelio to keep the Gent deficit at one run.

Although allowing the game-winning homer to Genao in the eighth, Robinson gave up a combined two hits over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, allowing the Gents to take the 2-1 lead on Webb’s home run in the fifth.

Noland kept the Gents in the game early, despite control problems that resulted in three hit batters and three walks. He allowed four hits and just the lone run in the second.

In other Mid-Con action, Oakland won 3-of-4 this weekend against Valparaiso, meaning Centenary now sits in a three-team tie for third place in the conference standings. Centenary, Valparaiso and Southern Utah all stand with 6-10 conference records, all tied for third in the conference. The top four teams in the Mid-Con advance to the conference championships, played May 24-26 at Western Illinois University.

Centenary must regroup following the series sweep at Oral Roberts, hosting Oakland in next weekend’s home series at Shehee Stadium. Conference tournament bids sit on the line in the series with the Golden Grizzlies, which starts Friday at 6 p.m.
