ELMHURST, Ill.—The Centenary College athletics department and its student-athletes have been honored by its fellow institutions with the 2006-07 Mid-Continent Conference Sportsmanship Award. It is the first time Centenary has been given the prestigious award since it joined the conference in the fall of 2003.

“To be given this award is a tremendous honor for our athletics department,” said Assistant Athletics Director David Pratt. “It speaks volumes about the kind of people we have working at Centenary and validates the family atmosphere we promote to our student-athletes.”

The Sportsmanship Award is given annually to the league institution that is judged by its peers to be the best in the conference in living up to the ideals of sportsmanship. Areas for evaluation include student-athlete conduct, staff/administrator conduct, coaches’ conduct, and event management.

“It is important to us that we provide a quality experience to our visiting teams when they are on our campus,” said Pratt. “However, our student-athletes and coaches deserve their due credit for representing Centenary in a mature and positive light when playing both at home and on the road.”

Past winners of the Mid-Con Sportsmanship Award include UMKC (1998-99), Southern Utah (1999-00, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06), IUPUI (2000-01), and Valparaiso (2001-02).
