SHREVEPORT, La. -- A record-setting night ended with Stephen F. Austin (11-10) defeating the Centenary baseball team (10-12) by a 20-4 margin Tuesday at Shehee Stadium.

On a night where nothing seemed to go right for the Gents, Stephen F. Austin hit a record five home runs in the 16-run route of Centenary. Two of the Lumberjack home runs were hit by junior second baseman Noel Trevino, who finished with four RBI and five runs scored in the SFA win Tuesday.

With looming storm clouds and threatening weather never arriving over Shehee Stadium, the Lumberjack bats brought the thunder in Tuesday’s route, scoring eight runs over the first three innings to take an 8-0 lead over the Gents.

Leading 2-0 following the top of the first inning, Trevino hit his first of two homers in the second inning, hitting a powerful shot over wall in left to score Kevin Crabtree and build the lead to four runs.

The SFA onslaught continued the following inning when junior shortstop Jeff Brewer hit his first home run of the season, clearing the left field wall to score two more runs for the Lumberjacks and ending the night for Centenary starter Will Kaage (Burlington, Wash.).

Kaage, who entered Tuesday’s game unbeaten in his last two starts, never seemed to get it going on the mound for the Gents. In 2 2/3 innings, the senior right-hander allowed eight runs on six hits.

Trailing 9-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Centenary showed its first signs of life.

After Justin Huff (Beaumont, Texas) drew a walk, junior outfielder Calvin Sanchez (Santa Cruz, Calif.) hit a two-out double off of the center field wall to score the first run of the contest for the Gents. Junior Cameron Penney (Valley Center, Calif.) followed Sanchez with a double down the right field line to score the second Gent run and cut the deficit to seven runs with four innings left.

The momentum for Centenary was short-lived, as Stephen F. Austin scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning off of a Steven Hill homer to left center.

Centenary junior Jason Blilie (Roanoke, Texas) registered a two-run double to right in the sixth inning, bringing home the final two runs for the Gents.

Stephen F. Austin added nine runs over the final three innings to complete the season sweep of the Gents. In the two games this season, the Lumberjacks clearly had Centenary’s number, as SFA scored 31 runs in two games against the Gents.

Senior pitcher Jacob Leonhardt went four innings for the Lumberjacks to pick up the win, allowing just two hits and shutting the Gents out.

In addition to Trevino’s four RBI, SFA third baseman Chris Smith had two hits and five RBI in Tuesday’s game.

Centenary must put Tuesday’s 16-run loss behind them and regroup for the weekend series against Arkansas-Little Rock. The Gents travel to Little Rock, Ark. for Friday’s series-opener at 6 p.m.
