The Summit League Soccer Coaches Pick Centenary Seventh
Monday, August 20, 2007

ELMHURST, Ill. -- Western Illinois, the defending men’s soccer conference champions, have been picked by the Summit League coaches to repeat. Centenary, after just missing the Mid-Con Tournament last season, has been chosen seventh in 2007.

The Leathernecks received five first-place votes after dropping just one contest in conference action last season. Oral Roberts, Oakland and IUPUI were picked second through fourth respectively, while the Golden Grizzlies were given one first place vote. UMKC, which was voted fifth, picked up a first place vote, while conference newcomer IPFW and Centenary round out the poll.

The Gents return their top two scorers from last season, junior Aaron Volanski (Magnolia, Texas) and sophomore Sam Robinson (Houston, Texas), while classmate Todd Faulkinberry (Bossier City, La.) also comes back. Volanski was named second team all-conference after leading Centenary with seven goals, while Faulkinberry and Robinson were picked for the Mid-Con’s All-Newcomer team.

In 2007, the Gents have 13 letterwinners returning along with 10 starters, which include three seniors and four juniors.

Centenary’s season begins on Saturday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Northeastern State (Okla.), a Division II team that made the Southwest Soccer Conference Tournament a season ago and just missed the NCAA Tournament.
