Story by Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. – With an offensive onslaught in the second half and great defense throughout, the Lady Techster soccer team picked up its initial victory of the 2007 season with a 3-0 win over Centenary on Sunday at Joe Aillet Stadium.

The victory marked the first win at Tech for first-year head coach Kevin Sherry and saw two Lady Techsters score their first career goals. Tech outshot the Ladies 22-7, including an 11-3 edge in shots on goal.

The first half saw both offenses struggle to get much going. Tech’s best scoring chance came early when a free kick by Kat McCullough from about

35 yards was just inches high, ricocheted off the crossbar and nearly went in, but Centenary keeper Ali Hilsher made a great save.

But Tech would get going after the break. Tech’s first goal came at the

59:19 mark when freshman Kiva Gresham beat the Centenary defender on the left side of the box and went far post, giving Tech a 1-0 lead. It was Gresham’s third goal of the season and second on the weekend.

Just five minutes later, that lead would double when Candace Novak found Brooke Lanie on the right side of the box, who sent a drive toward the far post to give the Lady Techsters a 2-0 lead at 64:47 and notch the first goal of her career.

It was only five more minutes before the Techsters would strike again.

This time, it was Lanie with a great cross from the right side, finding Jillian Pinder just outside the six-yard box. Pinder connected from point-blank range, earning her first career goal and extending the lead to 3-0 at 69:13.

Sophomore keeper Tara Gavlak earned her first career shutout with three saves on the afternoon. Kat McCullough had her best game of the season, registering six shots with five on goal for the day.

Tech is now 7-1-2 all-time in non-conference games at Joe Aillet Stadium. The win for Tech snapped a 16-game winless streak as the Lady Techsters improve to 1-7-0 on the year. Centenary drops to 3-6-0. The previous victory for the Techsters came against Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 17, 2006, with a 3-2 win in Ruston.

Tech will return to action next Sunday as it plays host to cross-state rival McNeese State. Kickoff against the Cowgirls is set for 1 p.m. at Joe Aillet Stadium.
