Wednesday, October 3, 2007

SHREVEPORT – On Wednesday night, the Centenary women’s soccer team will host Southern Utah at 7 p.m. for the home opener of conference play. The Ladies are looking to forget about Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Oral Roberts and improve to over .500 at home with a win against the Thunderbirds.

The Ladies are led by a pair of sophomores, Brittany Brooke O’Neal and Stefani Robbs, who have scored nine of the teams 12 goals. On Tuesday O’Neal was named Louisiana Sports Writers Association Soccer Player of the Week after scoring two goals and giving off two assists last week.

Defensively, senior Ali Hilsher continues to play out of her mind, after making six saves against Oral Roberts. Her one blemish came in the 57th minute when Natalya Manyan scored from 30 yards out. For the season, the Tulsa, Okla., native has made 55 stops and has allowed just 16 goals.

This season Southern Utah is 1-3-4 and 0-1-2 in the Summit League. The Thunderbirds tied South Dakota State (1-1) and Oral Roberts (2-2), but lost to Western Illinois (3-0) on Sept. 28.

Southern Utah is led offensively by Laura Goodrich and Allison Goettsche, who have each scored two goals. The Thunderbirds are being outscored by their opponents 18-5, while their goalkeeper Holly Senter has made 41 saves in 58 chances.

After Wednesday’s match, the Ladies will play at Oakland, IPFW and IUPUI before returning home on Oct. 18 to play Mississippi Valley State at 4 p.m.
