ELMHURST, Ill – After finishing second at the Mid-Con Championships last winter, the Centenary men’s swimming team was picked to be the runner up this season. Meanwhile the women ended their 2006-07 year fifth at the conference meet, and the coaches this season have chosen them to be fourth.

The Gents are retuning six all-conference honorees, and will be led by junior Chase Lambert. Centenary, who received one first place vote, will have eight upperclassmen returning, along with16 sophomores and freshmen.

Oakland was picked first and received five top votes from the conference coaches, while Eastern and Western Illinois were chosen third and fourth. Rounding out the poll is South Dakota State and IUPUI, who were picked fifth and sixth respectively.

Coming back for his sixth season will be head coach Butch Jordan, who was named the men’s conference Coach of the Year.

Despite returning the conference’s Newcomer of the Year, Maggie Vaughan and the Ladies were picked fourth behind third place Eastern Illinois, second place Western Illinois and top vote-getter Oakland. This season the Ladies return only one senior, Melanie Zimmerman, who has her name in several of the records at Centenary.

The Ladies will have a young team this season, welcoming back seven juniors and eight underclassmen. One of the sophomores is the aforementioned Vaughan, who set the conference championship meet record in the 500 and 1650 freestyle events.

“I’m not surprised where we were picked, and to me preseason polls don’t mean anything, it starts to matter at the conference meet,” said Jordan. “All the other meets during the season are just a warm up for the conference championship.”

The Ladies and Gents will be back in action on Saturday when they host Henderson State at 1 p.m.
