Gents Picked Ninth in Summit League Preseason Poll

ELMHURST, Ill.-The Summit League has announced the results of its preseason men’s basketball poll and IUPUI is favored to win the conference title. The Jaguars received 396 total points and 12 first-place votes to edge out defending champion Oral Roberts (393 points, 10 first-place votes). Centenary is projected to place ninth in the ten-team league after garnering 129 points from league coaches, sports information directors, and selected media members.


Oakland was the pick for third place (359 points) with four first-place votes and newcomer North Dakota State was tabbed fourth (351 points), also earning four first-place votes.


Southern Utah (217 points), UMKC (205 points), newcomer IPFW (162 points), and Western Illinois (137 points) filled out spots five through eight, while South Dakota State, also in its first year in the league, was picked to finish tenth.


Centenary junior point guard Tyrone Hamilton landed a spot on the preseason first team All-Summit League squad after ranking fourth in the conference in scoring last season at 15.8 points per game. He is joined by George Hill (IUPUI), David Jackson (WIU), Erik Kangas (OU), Austin Montgomery (IUPUI), and Ben Woodside (NDSU). Hill was also named the preseason player of the year.


In addition to Hamilton, the Gents also return junior guard Nick Stallings (8.5 ppg) and sophomore guard Chase Adams. Adams averaged 5.7 ppg and led the conference in steals per game and assist to turnover ratio in his freshman campaign.


Centenary opens its season with an exhibition against LSU-Shreveport on Nov. 6 before playing in its first regular season contest against Lipscomb on Nov. 9 in the Iowa State Tournament.
