Late Goals Doom Gents in Macomb

MACOMB, Ill. – The Centenary (3-11-0, 2-3-0) and Western Illinois (5-8-3, 1-2-1) men’s soccer teams played to a scoreless first 70 minutes, but in the final 20 WIU pulled away with goals in the 71st and 75th minutes to win 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

 

The Gents offense was covered all afternoon by the Leathernecks defense, as Centenary could only muster up two shots on goal. WIU meanwhile, created eight shots on goal with 14 total, as Nebojsa Opacic had three of the shots, an assist and a score to help lead the Leathernecks.  

 

The Centenary offense was led by freshmen Dan Martens and Ryan Watson, who had both shots on goal. In goal for the Gents senior James Speed made six saves and WIU’s keeper Stephen Paterson had two stops. 

 

Centenary still has one more chance to make the conference tournament, as it travels to UMKC on Saturday, Nov. 3.
