SHREVEPORT – In the much anticipated exhibition game between the Centenary and LSU-Shreveport women’s basketball teams it was the Ladies, who came out with the victory, as they battled to a 72-64 win on Tuesday evening in the Gold Dome. Leading the Ladies with a double-double on Tuesday was sophomore Leslie Forest, who scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The city civil war turned out to be a tightly contested game in the first half, as Centenary and LSUS were tied at 31 at the break. Keeping the game tight was the Ladies 14 turnovers, while the Lady Pilots were able hold to the ball, turning it over just seven times.

The Centenary turnovers should have told a different story, but what kept the Ladies in the half was their 65 percent shooting from the field, while LSUS shot just 40 percent. Centenary also cleaned up on the glass, as it grabbed 20 total rebounds and 19 defensive, while the Lady Pilots just managed 12 boards.

Forest helped lead the Ladies offense and defense in the first period as she grabbed eight rebounds and scored 10 points. Leading LSUS in scoring was Janai Sells and Whitney Hollins, who scored seven and nine points respectively.

However, in the second half turnovers continued to be a problem as the Ladies lost the ball eight times and LSUS just turned it over four times. The defensive effort by Centenary was its bright spot, as they pulled down 22 rebounds in the second stanza, while the Lady Pilots had just 16.

After the break LSUS jumped to a five point lead, but a Ladies 14-6 run late in the half helped turn the momentum. The run was started by freshman Sarah Weiler, who nailed a jumper with eight minutes left in the game, which helped Centenary wrangle its largest lead of the night at 11 points.

For game, junior Cierra Bush led the Ladies with 15 points, while freshman Ashley Jackson came away with 13 points. Rounding out the Centenary double digit scoring was sophomore Bethany Joseph, who scored 10. Leading LSUS was Whitney Hollins, who scored a game-high 17 points, while Edie Leonards chipped in with 14.

The next action for Centenary will be on Sunday when its opens up the regular season at Mississippi State at 2 p.m.
