Gents Face Texas College in Home Opener

SHREVEPORT—The Centenary men’s basketball team opens the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday with a battle against Texas College at 7 p.m. in the Gold Dome. The Gents are coming off of a split at the Iowa State Tournament, where they finished in second place, while the Steers are also off to a good start to their NAIA season.


Centenary (1-1) defeated Lipscomb 72-69 last Friday in the opening round of the American Family Insurance Cyclone Challenge hosted by Iowa State. The Gents then gave the host Cyclones all they could handle, losing to Iowa State 67-57 on Saturday. Tyrone Hamilton and Nick Stallings were both named to the all-tournament team for their outstanding play.


Hamilton scored 23 points in game one and Stallings added 21 before fouling out with four minutes to play. Both players also had four steals in the victory. Hamilton posted 17 points in the tournament final on 5-of-16 shooting while Stallings dropped in 16 points on 7-of-15 from the floor. Hamilton enters the game with Texas College averaging 20 ppg and Stallings is averaging 18.5 ppg.


Texas College (3-1) won its first three games to open its season before falling to LSU-Shreveport 100-97 in its last contest. Junior guard Czyz Bennett was named the Red River Athletic Conference player of the week last week after averaging 23.3 ppg in a pair of wins and a loss. He scored 35 points in the loss to LSUS and added 21 points in a win over Grambling. The Steers are averaging 103 points per contest thus far.


Centenary is 3-0 all-time against Texas College including a 96-45 win the last time the Gents and the Steers met in 2003.
