Centenary Student-Athletes Compete in State Flag Football Tournament
Tuesday, November 20, 2007

BATON ROUGE, La. – On Saturday and Sunday, the Centenary softball and women’s soccer team, along with a member of Chi-Omega took part in the Louisiana State Intramural Flag Football Tournament. The Ladies went 2-1 in pool play on Saturday, which was good enough to advance them into the tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Centenary opened Saturday with a 42-0 win over Nicholls State and in its second game of the day the Ladies were victorious over Loyola 48-0. However, in the night cap the Ladies came up short against Southern, losing to the Jaguars 19-0.

Despite being beaten by Southern, Centenary’s two wins moved them into tournament play. Getting a bit of revenge from the last year, the Ladies edged out Louisiana-Monroe 19-13 in the semifinals, which set up a rematch with Southern in the championship game.

It was a close final game on Sunday, but Southern was able to pull out the 14-12 win over Centenary, as the Jaguars connected on both of their extra points. It was the 13th straight time Southern has won the tournament.

After finishing the tournament as runner-up, the Ladies have been invited to play in the regional tournament at Southern Mississippi on Dec.1 and 2. Also being recognized for their work on the field, Emerald Doria, Lauren Flowers and Jennifer Fontenot were named to the all-tournament team.

Along with the softball and soccer teams, the baseball squad, Kappa Sigma and choir also participated in the tournament.
