New Year's Eve Battle Awaits Ladies
Saturday, December 29, 2007

SHREVEPORT – Looking to close out 2007 with a victory, the Centenary women’s basketball team will host 1-10 Sam Houston State on Monday at 2 p.m. The 2-9 Ladies will look to break their current five game slide, while trying to increase the Bearkats current losing streak.

Sam Houston’s last win came over Centenary’s Summit League rival Western Illinois on Nov. 24, 72-69. Bearkats forward Whitney Smith led the team with 25 points, while guard Lydia Gonzales had her third double-double at that point with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bearkats defense has allowed 80 points or more seven times and 90 points three times this season. Sam Houston gave up a season-high 91 points to Tulsa and Texas, while Auburn and Oklahoma State held the SHSU to a season-low 36 points.

Centenary, meanwhile, is continuing to look for its offensive punch after losing junior Cierra Bush for the season with an injury. The freshmen Dynamic Duo of Anne Farrell and Ashley Jackson are trying to pick up the slack, as they have combined to score 221 points.

The Ladies defense has played great most of the season, as they have out rebounded their opponents 310-291 and have blocked 34 shots. The defense has also held their foes 25 percent shooting from outside and 39 percent from the field.

After Monday’s game the Ladies will jump back into conference play on Saturday when they host Oral Roberts at 3 p.m
