SHREVEPORT – After making headway in the Mid-Con Tournament last spring, the Centenary baseball team has started to earn some respect from the national media for this coming season. Rivals.com selected the Gents third in the Summit League preseason poll after finishing the 2007 season runner-up to Oral Roberts in the conference tournament. The publication also picked sophomore pitcher Dakota Robinson as preseason first team all-conference.

Centenary, who finished 2007, 29-31, returns five starters and 16 letterwinners, along with senior third baseman Teddy Saenz and Robinson, who were named second team all-conference last season. The Gents will also have all-tournament honorees, first baseman Cameron Penny and pitcher Jeremy Sheehan back for their final season.

According to Rivals, ORU will finish first, Western Illinois should be second and Southern Utah will round out the top of the conference at fourth. The Internet publication chose South Dakota State to finish fifth, Oakland sixth, North Dakota State seventh and IPFW eighth, which completes the final four sports of the league.

“We have received some great recognition during the off-season,” said head coach Ed McCann. “I think this year’s team will be the one that competes for conference title and more.”

The Gents will open the season at home on Friday, Feb. 22, against Northern Iowa, with the first pitch at 6 p.m.
