ROCHESTER, Mich.—The Oakland Golden Grizzlies handed the Centenary men’s basketball team a 74-61 loss on Thursday night in Summit League action. The Gents suffered from poor rebounding and foul trouble throughout the night in being dealt their fifth consecutive defeat.

Centenary (7-9, 1-3 Summit) lost the battle on the boards 34-17 and allowed Oakland to pull down almost as many offensive rebounds (15) as the Gents had all total. The Golden Grizzlies also had their aggressiveness rewarded with 32 free throw attempts, of which they sank 28, compared to Centenary’s 13-of-17 showing from the charity stripe.

The first half was enough to do the Gents in, as the team did not cash in on its ample opportunities to take a commanding lead. Centenary led 23-22 with four minutes remaining in the opening period despite allowing 11 offensive boards, resulting in 14 second-chance points for Oakland. The Grizzlies then rattled off 15 of the last 18 points in the half to go up by 11 at the break.

Oakland (9-7, 4-1 Summit) extended its advantage to 13 after the first possession of the second half before Centenary responded with a 12-2 run to pull within three at 41-38. Lance Hill provided six points in a four-minute span, but also picked up his fourth foul and was relegated to the bench for the rest of the game.

Centenary’s Jerrald Bonham and Justin Glenn also picked up their fourth fouls early in the second period, forcing the Gents to play for long periods of time without a single member of their front line.

Nick Stallings converted an old fashioned three-point play with 7:46 to play to bring the Gents within one point at 52-51, but the undermanned Centenary team could not maintain its intensity down the stretch. Oakland’s resulting 11-0 run promptly put the game out of reach for the visitors.

Stallings finished with 18 points to lead Centenary on 7-of-13 shooting while Tyrone Hamilton dropped in three trifectas and totaled 16 points on the night. Chase Adams added 11 points and six assists in the loss for the Gents.

Derick Nelson netted 20 points to pace Oakland. Erik Kangas had 17 points and point guard Jonathon Jones enjoyed a memorable night with 12 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

Centenary returns to action on Saturday when they travel to face IPFW in another Summit League contest.
