SHREVEPORT – After traveling to IPFW and Oakland last week, the Centenary women’s basketball team will be in the Gold Dome for a pair of important conference games against IUPUI on Saturday and Western Illinois on Monday.

Last week was not good for Centenary, as it battled back to grab a three point lead at IPFW, but it still was not enough in the end falling by 12. At Oakland on Monday, the Ladies could not keep up with the fast paced Golden Grizzlies, as Centenary fell to 0-5 in conference play.

In the five conference games, the freshmen Dynamic Duo of Anne Farrell and Ashley Jackson average 10 and 11 point respectively to lead the Centenary offense. The Ladies 3-point threat of junior Karolina Zaloga and sophomore Bethany Joseph has helped take some of the pressure off of the freshmen, as they have combined to shoot 14-of-37 from outside.

Saturday’s opponent IUPUI has won three of five and is led by Jernisha Cann and Julia Whitted, who average 11.9 and 11.4 points per game. The Jags split their last homestand, losing to South Dakota State, 56-46, but bounced back to beat North Dakota State, 59-54.

As a team IUPUI is shooting 37 percent from the field, just 24 percent from outside and 66 percent from the free throw line.

It has been a tail of two seasons for WIU as it started the season 1-6, but since then the Westerwinds are 6-3 with five wins in the Summit League. Western is led by Gina Hugelier, Katy Davenport and Stephanie Lovingood, who all score over 11 points a game.

The unbeaten Westerwinds are tied for seventh in the league in scoring, averaging 61.3 points per game, while its defense picks up the slack and allows its foes just over 60 points per contest, which ranks third.

After the two games in Shreveport, Centenary will play at UMKC and Southern Utah next week to finish the first month of conference play.
