Youth Shines as Ladies Defeat Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The Centenary gymnastics team opened its season with a convincing 189.275 to 186.100 victory on the road against the Air Force Academy. The Ladies will be relying on their 10 underclassmen this season to contribute heavily, and the youngsters came through in a big way on Friday.


The Ladies won all four events as a team, but really separated themselves from the Falcons on the balance beam. Centenary won the event by almost a full two points (47.900 to 45.975) behind strong showings from newcomers Laura Loy and Marisa Schneider. Loy scored a 9.800 on the event to claim first place individually while Schneider posted a 9.750 to take second.


Sophomore Courtney Hawkins captured the highest score of the evening with her 9.850, first place effort on the vault. Loy (9.625), Schneider (9.600) and Alyssa Zawieja (9.600) took third and tied for fourth place respectively.


Freshman Tara Sandoval threw a 9.700 on the bars to take first place while Schneider (9.650) and Hawkins (9.575) placed first and second on the floor exercise. Schneider also took home the all-around title with a combined score of 37.800, giving Centenary the sweep of all five individual titles.


The Ladies will receive a short break on Saturday before gearing up to take on Air Force again on Sunday at 2 p.m.
