SHREVEPORT – The freshmen Dynamic Duo of Ashley Jackson and Anne Farrell led the Centenary women’s basketball team with 14 and 12 points respectively, but it was not enough on Monday. The Ladies fell to Summit League rival Western Illinois, 78-48, in the Gold Dome.

For 6 minutes Centenary looked like a team on a mission, going toe-to-toe with the top team in the conference. The Ladies and Westerwinds were tied at 14, but then Centenary went cold and could not find the bottom on the net for over 8 minutes.

The Ladies opened the contest shooting 60 percent and their defense held WIU to 42 percent. The Westerwinds heated up during the Ladies cold spell, as they shot over 50 percent in the first half, while Centenary was down to 36.

Leading the Ladies was Jackson, who scored eight points, while Jordan O’Brien scored 10 to lead WIU at halftime.

To open the next period, Western’s outstanding shooting continued, as they were hitting over 60 percent. Centenary, meanwhile, still could find pay dirt as it just five field goals in the first 13 minutes.

Midway through the second half the Ladies were able to find their grove and went on a 12-1 run, but it was a little too late. For the half Centenary shot 29 percent, while Western hit 47 percent of its baskets.

One of the positives coming out of the game for the Ladies was cutting down on their turnovers, as they had just 21.

For the game, Centenary shot 32 percent from the floor, 46 percent from outside and 70 percent from the free throw line. Western shot a blistering 50 percent from the field, 60 percent from deep and 86 percent from the charity stripe.

Individually, WIU’s Gina Hugelier nearly had the one of the best feats in basketball, a triple-double, as she came away with 12 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists to lead the Westerwinds. Junior Karolina Zaloga scored nine points, while senior Brittany Barbee scored her first two points of the season on a lay-up to help the Ladies offense.

The next action for Centenary will be on Saturday when its travels to UMKC for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
