Ladies Look to End Road Woes
Thursday, January 24, 2008

SHREVEPORT – After closing out 2007 on a high note, the Centenary women’s basketball team has begun 2008 on shaky ground. The Ladies will have a chance close out January on a positive note this week when they play at UMKC (8-10, 1-6 Summit League) on Saturday and Southern Utah (3-15, 1-6 Summit League) on Monday.

Centenary has dropped 16 straight games away from the Gold Dome and it has never won a Summit League (0-32) game on the road. Twice this season the Ladies have had a lead in the closing seconds only to fall at the buzzer to Southeastern Louisiana and McNeese State.

One of the athletes that continues to shine on offense is sophomore Bethany Joseph, who joined the starting lineup fulltime on New Year’s Eve. In that time Joseph is shooting 41 percent (20-of-48) from the field, 42 percent (17-for-40) from outside, 100 percent (9-of-9) from the free throw line. In six games the New Iberia, La., native has started, she is scoring 11 points per contest.

Joseph has hit 35-of-91 from outside to lead Centenary, while junior Karolina Zaloga is tied for second, hitting 13-for-45 from beyond the arc.

The Defense continues to be led by the Freshmen Dynamic Duo of Anne Farrell and Ashley Jackson. Farrell has grabbed 112 rebounds and Jackson has pulled down 83. Right on their coattails is sophomore Leslie Forest, who has 81 boards, which just misses the top 20 in the conference.

UMKC, meanwhile, comes into Saturday evening’s games on a two games slide. The Kangaroos lost at North Dakota State and South Dakota State and their only conference win came at home over Southern Utah.

The offensive threats for UMKC are Chazny Morris and Alysa Klein, who score 17 and 14 points per game. Klein shoots 54 percent from the field and is eighth in the Summit League in rebounds (121).

Southern Utah has lost three straight games and is just 3-5 at home this season. The Tunderbirds wins at The Centrum have come over Concordia (Calif.), Portland and IUPUI.

Anne Westwood is SUU leading rebounder and scorer, as she is second in the league is rebounds (9.1) and averages over 11 points per game. Erin Heuett is second on the team in scoring, averaging 7.7 points, while Challis Pascucci pulls down 5.2 rebounds a game.
