Ladies Falter on Beam, Fall to UIC
Saturday, January 26, 2008

CHICAGO, Ill.—The Centenary gymnastics team held the lead by a point and a half going into the final rotation against Illinois-Chicago, but several miscues on the event allowed the Flames to steal away the win 188.650 to 187.625 on Saturday.

Leading 142.900 to 141.375 with the Ladies headed to the beam and the Flames going to the floor, Centenary felt confident about its chances to knock off fellow Midwest Independent Conference member Illinois-Chicago in its home arena. However, a domino effect occurred as one performer after another faltered for the Ladies.

Meredith Smith began the rotation for Centenary with a 9.000 and was followed by Tara Sandoval’s 8.100. Alyssa Zawieja then finished her routine with a score of 8.825, meaning the Ladies would have to count at least one sub-par score.

The problem continued to snowball as Julia Cornelius and Marissa Schneider posted scores of 8.975 and 8.200 respectively. Laura Loy finished out the Centenary lineup with a solid 9.725, but the damage was done.

The Ladies scored a team total of 44.725 on the beam and UIC collected a 47.275 on the floor to overcome the deficit.

Centenary won every other event head-to-head by at least half a point and bettered the Flames on the bars by over a full point. Cornelius and Sandoval led the charge on the bars with scores of 9.675 and 9.650 for second and fourth places respectively.

Smith and Courtney Hawkins finished first and second on the vault with efforts of 9.650 and 9.600. Loy’s beam performance landed her in the second spot and Schneider and Hawkins finished in a three-way tie for first on the floor with a 9.675.

Schneider also placed second in the all-around to Anne Kachman (37.925 to 36.500).

Centenary will return to action when it hosts Illinois State in the Gold Dome on Feb. 1st.
