Gents Picked Third in Coaches Preseason Poll
Thursday, January 31, 2008

ELMHURST, Ill. – After finishing runner-up to Oral Roberts last season in the conference tournament, the Centenary baseball team was picked third by The Summit League coaches. The Gents received 35 points and one first place vote, while Oral Roberts the top point getter, received 49 with seven first place votes.

Centenary this season will be a senior laden team, as it has 11 on the squad. The Gents will be led by their four senior captains, catcher Alex Maldonado, pitcher Johnny Noland, third baseman Teddy Saenz and pitcher Jeremy Sheehan.

Last season Saenz batted .308, with 64 hits and was name second team all-conference. Anchoring the pitching staff will be sophomore Dakota Robinson, who was also named second team all-conference after leading the league in appearances (31) and pitching in 58 innings.

“I like where we were picked, because we are still a bit of an underdog going into the season,” said head coach Ed McCann. “Though I know we will still get everybody’s best effort everyday so we have to be ready.”

Western Illinois was chosen second with 40 points, while South Dakota State was picked fourth. However, because the Jackrabbits are still in their Division I transition year they will not make the post season. Taking their place would be Southern Utah, who was picked fifth with 25 points.

Rounding out the preseason poll is sixth place Oakland (21 points), seventh place North Dakota State (15 points) and eighth place IPFW (8 points).

The Gents will begin the season on Friday, Feb. 22, against Northern Iowa in Shehee Stadium at 6 p.m.
