Offense Sputters for Ladies

TULSA, Okla. – Early offensive woes could not be overcome by the Centenary women’s basketball team. The Ladies fell on Saturday afternoon to Oral Roberts in Summit League action, 79-35.    


Through the first five and half minutes, Centenary (3-17, 0-10 The Summit League) still continued to be in its shooting slump. The Ladies were shooting just 1-of-7 from the field and 0-for-3 from outside, while ORU (12-9, 6-4 The Summit League) was an impressive 5-for-8 from the field and 2-of-3 from deep.


As the first period continued, Centenary still was unable to hit its stride on offense, shooting 5-of-27. The Ladies’ offense was led by junior Karolina Zaloga, who was 2-of-6 from the field, while freshman Anne Farrell 4-for-4 from the free throw line.


Twice during the opening 20 minutes, Centenary went 4 plus minutes without hitting a bucket. The Ladies defense, meanwhile, shutout the Golden Eagles offense for no more than two minutes.


To open the second half, both teams could not find their offense, as they combined to shoot 4-for-18. The offense for Centenary continued to come from the Olsztyn, Poland, native, as she hit a team-high 11 points midway through the second period.


Normally a team that can hit 3-point field goals, Centenary hit just 1-of-20 from outside, while its defense held ORU to just 6-of-16. The Ladies lone 3-point field goal came from senior Brittany Barbee.


Centenary’s defense was led by Farrell and sophomore Leslie Forrest, who pulled down nine and six rebounds respectively. The Golden Eagles were led by a pair of 12 rebound performances from Janae Voelker and Leanna Robinson, which helped ORU out rebound Centenary, 53-44.


For the game Centenary shot a dismal 18 percent from the field (12-of-64), while ORU shot 41 percent (26-for-62).


The next action for the Ladies will be on Saturday when Oakland comes to Shreveport for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
