Gents Host Oakland in Summit League Game of the Week
Friday, February 8, 2008

SHREVEPORT—The Centenary men’s basketball team looks to rebound against Oakland on Saturday after a disappointing loss to IPFW at home on Thursday. The game between the Gents and the Golden Grizzlies is also the Summit League Game of the Week. As a result, the first 1,000 fans will receive Summit League Mini-Stress Basketballs.

Centenary (9-14, 3-8 Summit) currently sits in a tie for sixth place in the conference standings and is running out of chances to improve its draw in the upcoming Summit League Tournament in March. Only seven games remain for the Gents and just two will be at home after Saturday.

Oakland (12-11, 7-5 Summit) is in a tie with the Gents last opponent, IPFW, for third place. The Golden Grizzlies lost to undefeated Oral Roberts in their last game, 60-53. Derick Nelson paces the team with a scoring average of 17.1 points per game while guards Johnathon Jones and Erik Kangas are posting 15 and 14 points per contest respectively.

Oakland is third in the league in scoring offense at 75.7 points, just ahead of Centenary at 70.3 ppg. The two teams are also comparable on the defensive side of the court with Oakland ranking eighth and Centenary ninth in scoring defense at 74.4 and 75.2 ppg respectively.

The Gents need a return to normalcy from their one-two punch of Tyrone Hamilton and Nick Stallings in order to discard Oakland. The combo is averaging 33 points a game, but was held to just 12 points in Thursday’s loss, while shooting a woeful 4-of-26 from the floor.

Oakland holds a 7-2 all-time lead over Centenary in the series and won the previous meeting this season in Rochester, Mich., 74-61.

Tip time is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday and the game can be heard on KSCL 91.3 FM in Shreveport-Bossier and www.GoCentenary.com. A live video stream can be viewed at the official Summit League website, www.TheSummitLeague.org.
