Ladies Hang Tough with #7 Baylor
Sunday, February 17, 2008

WACO, Texas—The Centenary softball team concluded its participation in the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor University with a pair of games on Sunday. The Ladies were upended by Purdue, 8-0, and then lost a close game with #7 Baylor on its home field, 4-2. Allison Shepperd and Haley Bassett were named to the all-tournament team for their outstanding efforts over the weekend.

Centenary (1-9) collected eight hits off the Baylor pitching staff and gave the Bears all they could handle. Shepperd tallied three of those hits in going 3-for-3 with a double, while five other players collected base hits as well.

Baylor (3-1) took the lead in the second inning with three runs off of starter Ryan Thacker (1-4). With one out, a double followed by a pair of singles plated the first run for the Bears. After a groundout, a clutch two-out single pushed across two more runs to put Baylor on top 3-0.

The scored remained the same until the fifth inning when a solo homerun staked the Bears to a 4-0 advantage.

The Ladies struck back in the top of the sixth when Bonnie Matak led off with a walk and Lauren Flowers followed with a pinch-hit two-run homer to right center field. That would be all the scoring Centenary would muster and the game ended at 4-2 in favor of Baylor.

In the first game of the day, Purdue used 10 hits, while giving up only two hits to the Ladies in the 8-0 victory. The Boilermakers plated three runs in each of the first two innings to jump out to a commanding 6-0 lead.

Caitlin Cavarra and Haley Bassett each collected singles in the loss for Centenary.

The Ladies return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Ruston, La., to face rival Louisiana Tech at 5 p.m.
