Ladies Rally to Defeat Louisiana Tech 3-0

RUSTON—The Centenary softball team picked up an impressive win over in-state rival Louisiana Tech on the road Wednesday evening. The Ladies, playing without their natural three, four, and five hitters in the batting order due to two injuries and a death in the family, rallied late to beat the Lady Techsters 3-0.

Ryan Thacker (2-4) tossed her first complete game shutout of the season for Centenary (2-9). The sophomore scattered only three hits and struck out six, while walking only two. She kept the Ladies in the game as the two teams entered the seventh inning in a scoreless tie.

The Ladies blew the game open in the final inning with the aid of three hits and a few wild pitches. Haley Bassett kept her hot hitting going, leading off with a double to center field. Allison McClain, who notched three of Centenary’s five hits, followed with a single to put runners on the corners. McClain was then lifted for pinch-runner Leslie Postles.

Postles promptly stole second base. Lauren Flowers struck out swinging, but reached first when the catcher could not corral the wild pitch. Bassett scored on the play and Postles advanced to third.

Amy Wiedeman then put down the perfect bunt for a single, scoring Postles and moving Flowers to second base. Beth Krysiak bounced a chopper to third base, but the indecisiveness of the Tech fielder allowed all runners to reach safely. Another wild pitch then pushed Flowers across the plate.

Two ground outs and a force out at the plate would get Louisiana Tech (5-5) out of the inning without further damage, but Thacker would keep the home team from mounting any sort of comeback in the bottom of the inning.

McClain led all hitters, going 3-for-3 with a double, while batting cleanup in the absence of Emerald Doria, Brittany Williams, and Allison Shepperd.

The Ladies will look to keep the momentum going when they travel south this weekend for a tournament hosted by the University of Houston. Centenary will open the event on Friday with games against Texas State and Kansas.
