Gents Baseball Season is Underway
Thursday, February 21, 2008

SHREVEPORT – Blue skies are predicted for this weekend and the Centenary baseball team is hoping its season is filled with them. The Gents are coming off of 29-31 record and they closed out the year as runner-up to Oral Roberts in the Mid-Con Tournament. 2008 season will get started on Friday at 6 p.m., when Northern Iowa comes to town for a four-game series.

This season, Centenary is going to be led by a strong pitching staff, which is anchored by Super Sophomore Dakota Robinson. Robinson was named second team all-conference last year as a reliever, after leading the league with 31 appearances.

The Gents will also have plenty of leadership on their roster this season, as they welcome back 11 seniors. Senior infielder Teddy Saenz will be one of the leaders, as he batted .308, with 64 hits and was named second team all-conference for his efforts.

The outfield will see a lot of new faces in 2008, as Centenary only returns one starter, senior Calvin Sanchez. The left fielder played in 57 games and hit .302, while swiping 12 bases.

Last season, Northern Iowa was 23-28 and 8-16 in the Missouri Valley Conference, just missing the conference tournament. The Panthers are led by outfielder Deric Manrique and infielder Brandon Douglas, who were first team all-conference last season and preseason all-league this season.

Manrique led the team with a .351 batting average, while Douglas was third with a .339 average. The two combined to hit six round trippers, knock in 65 RBIs and hit 35 doubles.

UNI’s pitching staff will be led by Nick Kirk and Guido Fonseca, who combined to win nine games and pitched in 138 innings.

After this weekends action for the Gents will be a doubleheader with Texas College on Wednesday with first pitch at 4:05 p.m. in Shehee Stadium.
