SHREVEPORT – The old adage in basketball is, “It’s hard to beat somebody three times in one season,” and the Centenary women’s basketball team is trying to hold that statement true on Saturday when it plays Oakland in the first round of The Summit League Championship, presented by J.D. Young.

The eighth seeded Ladies (4-24) take on the No.1 Grizzlies (19-9) at noon in the John Q. Hammonds Arena in Tulsa. Oakland defeated Centenary twice this season on Jan. 14, 93-43, and, 72-55, on Feb. 9.

In the first meeting, Centenary was led by junior Karolina Zaloga, who scored 13 points and in the second match-up, sophomore Bethany Joseph put in 16. One of the downfalls for the Ladies was their turnovers, as they combined to lose the ball 52 times.

On Thursday it was announced by the conference that freshman Anne Farrell was named to the all-newcomer team. Farrell led all freshmen in scoring (11.6), rebounding (7.1) and field goal percentage (.469).

However, the other half of the Dynamic Duo, Ashley Jackson was left off the all-newcomer team, despite being fourth among freshman in scoring (9.9) and third in rebounding (5.2). Also feeling the snub was Zaloga, who led all newbie’s in assists with 110.

Oakland is led by junior Jessica Pike, who was named first team all-conference after leading the Grizzlies with 16 points per game. Also leading Oakland is Melissa Jeltema, who was named second team all-league after scoring 13.7 points, while Hanna Reising added 12.7 per contest was named to the honorable mention team.

If the Ladies can pull off the upset on Saturday, they will play the winner of the 4/5 game, Oral Roberts or IPFW at noon on Monday.
