Gents Have Two Midweek Games

SHREVEPORT – After notching its first conference win of 2008, the Centenary baseball team will now focus on a pair of midweek games. The Gents travel to Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday and will host Wylie on Wednesday; both games are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.


The probable starting pitchers for Centenary (18-13) on Tuesday and Wednesday will be Jeremy Sheehan and Johnny Noland. Sheehan is 3-2 with a 4.72 ERA with six starts and one complete game. Noland, who pitched in two innings on Sunday, has a 6.07 ERA, in  29.2 innings and is 2-3.


Leading the Gents offense is Cameron Penney, who is hitting .396, with 44 hits and 35 RBIs. Centenary also has six other hitters who are batting over .300, which includes Tim Deering (.333), Alex Maldonado (.313), Jomar Tabor (.306), Garrett DeRooy (.302) and Calvin Sanchez (.300).


The Warhawks (22-12) come into the game on a two-game winning streak, as they picked-up their victories over conference foe Louisiana-Lafayette. ULM is currently just two games over .500 at home and have lost three of its last five in Monroe.


Getting the call for the Warhawks is Kyle Smith, who is 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA in two starts and 14 innings of work. As a team, ULM’s ERA 5.35, while its opponents have a 6.97 ERA.


Offensively, the Warhawks are led by Ben Soignier, who is hitting .397 and is tied for the team lead in home runs with eight. ULM has hit 49 bombs, with nine of its regulars with three or more.


Wylie (12-11-3) comes into Wednesday night’s game on a four game skid, but is 5-5 in its last 10 games. The Wildcats lost two at LSUS last week and were beaten at UT-Brownsville over the weekend. 


Following the action during on Tuesday and Wednesday, Centenary will jump back into conference play with a four-game series at Oakland starting on Friday.
