Grand Slam Too Much to Overcome for Gents
Wednesday, April 23, 2008

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Centenary baseball team allowed just one run in the first inning and bounced back nicely in the second to score twice. However, a grand slam by Sam Houston State’s Ryan Weber put the dagger in the Gents hearts, as they fell to the Bearkats (26-15), 8-7, on Wednesday night.

For the Gents (22-16) Ryan Bernsen, Steele Lewis and Teddy Saenz picked up two hits, while Gordon Murphy, Tim Deering and Lewis also had an RBI.

The Gents had a chance in the ninth to pull ahead with two-out and two on, but Saenz took a strike three looking. Centenary scored four runs in the ninth, after coming into the inning trailing by five.

On the mound Joe Hagen (0-4) took the loss after giving up all eight runs, also allowed eight hits, while walking two and fanning three. Chris LaLonde came in and pitched the final two frames and scattered just one hit and struck out three.

Centenary will return to action on Friday when it plays at Summit League rival IPFW at 2:00 p.m. The Gents and Mastodons are tied for fourth in the conference standings and the game can be heard on www.gocentenary.com.
