SHREVEPORT – The Centenary women’s basketball team and head coach Steve Curtis have announced the signing of 5-foot-7 Tanika Johnson of Pelican, La., to a National Letter of Intent. Johnson becomes the fourth to sign for 2008; she joins Chelsea Johnson (Houston), Megan Daniel (Houston) and Natasa Draganic (Niksic, Montenegro).

“Tanika is a very athletic and good with the ball. She won a couple of state championships in track and is very quick, which makes her fast on the gym floor,” said Curtis. “We are thrilled to have her come to Centenary and we look forward to her contributions this season.”

Johnson led the state in scoring with 31 points per game, she was named district 3C MVP and earned Louisiana Sports Writers Association First Team All-State. She was also a two-time state champion in track for the 2008 season, running the 300 and 100 hurdles and was also the state runner-up in the high jump.

“She is by far the best athlete I ever had,” says Pelican head coach Cleve Craig. “As a senior Johnson was one of the most improved student-athletes, and not because skill level improved, it was her leadership.”
