Summit League Tournament Begins Thursday

SHREVEPORT – The second season will begin with a bang for the No. 4 Centenary (30-24, 13-15) baseball team, as it drew Summit League powerhouse and No. 1 seed Oral Roberts (43-12) in the first round. The Gents and Golden Eagles will start their postseason ride on Thursday with first pitch set for 7 p.m. at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa.


The first meeting between ORU and Centenary was on for the ages, as the game went 16 innings and had four ties with three lead changes. The Golden Eagles finally won in the top of the 16th with an RBI ground out by David Genao.


Cameron Penney topped the Gents in batting with a .347 average, while he was second in RBIs with 40. Ricky Imperiali, meanwhile, was first on the team in RBIs (41) and doubles (17), his 17 doubles ranked 9th all-time in a season at Centenary.


 The Gents pitching staff was anchored by Justin Kraft, who had a team-low 3.42 ERA and a team-high nine wins. His nine victories tie for first all-time in a season in the Centenary record books.


ORU’s outstanding offense was led by Brian Van Kirk, who had 15 home runs and knocked in 66 runs. The Golden Eagles also have five other batters who belted seven or big flies.


The pitching staff has been outstanding for ORU all year, as it has two pitchers who have won 10 plus games. Carlos Luna is 12-0 with a 2.88 ERA, while Michael Jarman is 10-2 with a 3.48 ERA. Jerry Sullivan, meanwhile, is 8-2 and has the highest ERA amongst starters with a 3.97.


Following Thursday night’s game, the Gents will either play Western Illinois or Southern Utah at 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. on Friday, depending on their result with ORU. All of Centenary’s action can be heard on
