Ladies Fall to Jackrabbits

SHREVEPORT – Freshman Chelsea Johnson poured in 17 points, which tied her career-high, but it wasn’t enough for the Centenary women’s basketball team, who fell 97-52 to regular season Summit League champion South Dakota State on Saturday afternoon.

The Ladies hung tough with SDSU early, but a 10-2 run by the Jackrabbits pushed them ahead for good. Centenary kept its deficit under double digits until the 9:51 mark when SDSU went up by 11.

Turnovers were the Ladies downfall in the first 20 minutes, as they lost the handle 15 times and SDSU scored 21 points off of the miscues. However, Centenary did manage to out rebound the Jackrabbits 17-13, led by senior Karolina Zaloga’s four.

The Ladies had no answer for SDSU’s offense in the second half though, as the Jackrabbits opened the period on a 10-0 run. During SDSU’s run, Centenary missed four field goals and turned the ball over three times.

For SDSU in the second stanza, the Jackrabbits scored 22 points in the paint and shot a blistering 61 percent (19-of-31) from the field. The Ladies, meanwhile, turned the ball over 11 times and shot 37 percent (10-of-27) from the field.

Behind Johnson’s 17 was junior Bethany Joseph, who added seven points, while senior Cierra Bush, Johnson and Zaloga each grabbed four rebounds. The leading scorer for SDSU was Jennifer Warkenthien, who scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Up next for the Ladies will be a visit from North Dakota State on Monday evening, with ‘Senior Day’ festivities being held after the game. The contest can be heard on and 91.3 KSCL in Shreveport/Bossier City.
