Monday, March 2, 2009

SHREVEPORT – Senior Karolina Zaloga scored a team-best 12 points and sophomore Anne Farrell pulled down 12 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Centenary women’s basketball team to a victory over North Dakota State, as the Ladies fell 56-52 in Summit League action.

Zaloga and Cierra Bush made the most of their ‘Senior Night’ in the first half, as they helped the Ladies offense with 17 points. It was also a strong defensive effort for Centenary, holding NDSU to just 36 percent shooting from the floor.

The Ladies were able to take advantage of their strong defense by taking an eight point lead midway through. However, the Bison were able keep the game close and get the game to one with 22 seconds to play.

Nearing the end of the period, Centenary was able to get the last shot off, but on the field goal Zaloga was fouled and went to the line for three free throws. The conference’s third best free throw shooter was able to hit 2-of-3, which gave Centenary a three point cushion.

The Bison started heating up in the second half by shooting 50 percent from the field and was able to take their largest lead of seven halfway through. However, Centenary kept the game close, as their dominating defense kept NDSU scoreless over three minutes.

The Ladies got the game down to two with 3:12 left, but a 4-0 run by NDSU pushed the contest to six with 1:26 left. Centenary though did get back within a bucket with 19 seconds left, but two Katie Birkel free throws iced the game.

Overall, Inger Hodgson scored a game-high 22 points, while Birkel added 12 for NDSU. Bush, meanwhile, was second in  scoring for Centenary, as she chipped in nine points and pulled down seven rebounds.

2008-09 season is now complete for Centenary and it will begin the 2009-10 season in November.
