SHREVEPORT – This week is Read Across America, a program designed for children to start reading. Members of the Centenary men’s basketball team along with assistant head coach Carlin Hartman and Director of Athletics Tom Tallach read to kids at AC Steere Elementary School on Monday.

Gary Redus II and Daman Starring read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, while Hartman took on Cat in the Hat. Tallach, meanwhile, read to a kindergarten class about a giraffe that couldn’t dance and the grasshopper that taught him how.

“We are proud to have participated in the Read Across America Week programming at A. C. Steere Elementary,” said Tallach. “Our student-athletes and coaches are great role models for the youth of this community.  They know how important it is to give back and, in this case, spread the word about how important reading is.”

Now in its twelfth year, the program focuses on motivating children to read, in addition to helping them master basic skills.

The nationwide reading celebration takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, community centers, and more participate by bringing together kids and books, and you can too!
