Gents and Jackrabbits Open Conference Play

SHREVEPORT – Winners of eight in a row, the Centenary baseball team will try to extend its winning streak this weekend when South Dakota State comes to Shehee Stadium for a Summit League series starting on Friday at 6 p.m.


The Gents began their winning streak with a 31-8 victory over Harvard back on March 21 and continued it by defeating Grambling Tuesday 12-5. During the streak junior Michael Tompkins leads the way with a .533 average and 16 RBIs, while sophomore Boone Whiting holds a 1.64 ERA and is 2-0, along with junior Dakota Robinson and freshman Jacob Lugo.


On the season, junior Tell Ross is hitting .420, with six doubles, one triple, two home runs and 27 RBIs. Tompkins, meanwhile, has a .416 average to go along with 32 hits, seven doubles and four dingers.


The expected starting rotation for Centenary will be sophomore Justin Kraft getting the call on Friday, with Robinson and Whiting taking the ball on Saturday and sophomore Stephen Tromblee closing the series Sunday. 


The Jackrabbits have dropped four straight games and have allowed 12 or more runs in each of those contests. SDSU has not played since March 22 with its last two games being postponed due to rain and snow in Brookings.


Offensively for the Jacks, Tony Martin tops the team with a .333 average, while Jesse Sawyer is hitting .313 with three home runs and 10 RBIs. As a team, SDSU has a .264 average, scored 65 runs and has 35 extra base hits.


Getting the call on Friday for the Jacks will be Layne Somsen, who is 0-5 with a 6.75 ERA, while Mike Robinson and Sam Pieczynski will be Saturday’s starting pitchers. The Jackrabbits will conclude the series with Caleb Thielbar, who has throw 29.2 innings and has allowed 38 earned run. 


Following the series with SDSU, Centenary won’t return home until a April 14 when it hosts Grambling at 6 p.m.
