NACOGDOCHES, Texas—The Centenary softball team struggled to find momentum in a 6-0 loss to Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday afternoon at Hoya Field.

The Ladies (24-14) quickly fell down 1-0 in the bottom of the first when the Ladyjacks put together three hits. Centenary didn’t record a hit of its own against SFA pitcher Monkia Covington until sophomore Caitlin Cavarra singled through the left side in the top of the third.

Again, in the latter half of the inning, SFA (20-21) found a way to plate three more runs to make it a 4-0 ballgame on a leadoff single followed by a two run homerun by catcher Kim Daley.

The Ladies were shut down in the fourth and fifth, allowing SFA to gain a 6-0 advantage on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when freshman pitcher Hillary Phillips was relieved by sophomore Jessica Bock.

A quick sixth inning gave Centenary its last chance in the top of the seventh to narrow the deficit when senior Allison McClain singled to right field with two outs for the Ladies’ second hit of the game. Though, Covington was able to close the game with an 11-strike out performance, not allowing Centenary to score.

Phillips (12-6) tossed 4.0 innings, giving up five runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out six. Bock threw 2.0 innings, allowed one run on one hit, while fanning two.

Centenary will be back in action this weekend as it travels to IUPUI to face the Jaquars in Summit League action.
