Gents Complete Sweep of Leathernecks

MACOMB, Ill. – The Centenary baseball team completed the three-game sweep of Summit League opponent Western Illinois on Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 game one victory and a 10-5 nightcap win.

Game one

Junior Travis Leversen knocked in Centenary’s (23-5, 6-1) first run of the day in the third, but WIU (7-17, 3-4) struck back with two in the bottom half. Freshman Jeff Schaffert, who has been a clutch hitter for the Gents this season, came up in the fourth and knocked in two runs with a double, which proved to be the game-winner.

Sophomore Boone Whiting went the distance for Centenary, as he fanned nine for the fifth time this season. His counterpart John Sneegas went 5.1 innings allowed four runs on six hits, walked two and struck out two.

Game two

Junior Tell Ross and senior Jomar Tabor each had two RBIs in the nightcap, which was part of Centenary seven run first inning. Schaffert picked up his third and fourth RBIs of the day in the first and fifth innings to help lead the Gents’ offense.

Sophomore Stephen Tromblee and senior Chris LaLonde combined to strike out eight Leatherneck batters. Tromblee remains perfect on the season, as he notched his third victory of the year.

Centenary will jump back into action on Tuesday when I-20 rival Grambling comes to town for a single game starting at 6 p.m.
