Ladies Fall Short In Arkansas
Thursday, April 16, 2009

SHERWOOD, Ark. – Junior Haley Bassett scored twice and picked up one hit, but it wasn’t enough to push the Centenary softball team to victory, as the Ladies fell to Arkansas 6-2 on Wednesday evening.

Centenary (27-15) scored a run in the first after freshman Lindsey Smith flew out to left field, but the Ladies couldn’t hold their lead. The Razorbacks (25-17) came back with three runs in the second, as Sandra Smith drove in both of her RBIs with a double to the left field gap.

After a scoreless third inning, Arkansas put one on the board in the fourth and two in the fifth frame to go up 6-1. Centenary scored its final run in the sixth inning after freshman Jenny Varteressian drove home Bassett with a single to center field.

Sophomore Jessica Bock took the loss after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing six runs on five hits. Freshman Hillary Phillips came in relief and threw the final 1.1 innings and gave up just one hit, while fanning two.

The Ladies will return to action on Friday and Saturday when they travel to Summit League foe Oakland for a three-game series.
