SHREVEPORT -- The Centenary baseball team will look to stop its five game slide on Tuesday when I-49 rival Northwestern State comes to town for a single game beginning at 6 p.m.

The Gents earlier this season defeated NSU 3-2 on freshman Jeff Schaffert’s RBI single up the middle in the seventh. Fellow classmate Jacob Lugo got the win after pitching 6.2 innings and allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out four.

Expected to take the ball for Centenary on Tuesday is Joe Hagen, who is 1-0 with a 4.29 ERA in four starts. His counterpart will be Ben Rodriguez, who has a 12.19 ERA in four appearances and is 0-3.

Junior Tell Ross leads the Gents with a .393 batting average and five home runs, while his classmate Michael Tompkins has also put five over the fence. In 2009, Centenary is batting a league-high .325, scored 272 runs and has hit 21 home runs, which is eight more than the team hit all of last season.

The Demons are led offensively by Justin O’Neal, who is hitting .364 with six home runs and 29 RBIs. Chase Lyles is also having a productive year, as he has hit nine long balls and has knocked in 30 of his teammates.

After Tuesday’s game, Centenary will return to conference action on Friday when it hosts IPFW in a four-game series. The Gents and Mastodons split the season series last year in Fort Wayne.
