Shepard's Homer Not Enough for Gents
Wednesday, April 22, 2009

SHREVEPORT – Junior Cliff Shepard blasted a three-run homer to right centerfield in the first inning, but it wasn’t enough for the Centenary baseball team as the Gents fell to Northwestern State on Tuesday night 10-6.

Centenary (23-11) carried its three run lead until the third when NSU (17-18) had its first four batters reach base. NSU’s Justin O’Neal had the big hit in the inning when he doubled home two of his teammates, which put the Demons up for good.

The Gents cut their deficit down to one on an infield single by Jeff Schaffert, but another five spot by NSU in the fifth put the game away. Centenary would add on a run in the sixth with an RBI by senior Ricky Imperiali and then freshman Morgan Brian scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.

Getting the start for the Gents was senior Joe Hagen, who pitched 4.2 innings, allowed 10 runs with one walk, while junior Michael Tompkins went the final 4.1 innings and scattered just seven hits.

Up next for Centenary will be a four-game home conference series with IPFW beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
