Gents Looking to Stop Six Game Slide
Thursday, April 23, 2009

SHREVEPORT – The Centenary baseball team will try to bounce out of its week long skid when it hosts Summit League foe IPFW in a four-game series beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday.

After winning 6-of-7 to start April, the Gents have not won since a 10-5 victory over Western Illinois back on the 12th. During this six game slide Centenary has allowed over 10 runs five times.

For the Gents, juniors Tell Ross, Cliff Shepard and Michael Tompkins have all hit five home runs to top the team. Ross also leads the squad with a .391 average and 36 RBIs, while Tompkins has also drove in 36.

Expected to start for Centenary on the hill will be Justin Kraft (5-2, 2.77 ERA) on Friday, Dakota Robinson (4-2, 4.46 ERA) and Boone Whiting (4-2, 3.94) Saturday and Stephen Tromblee (3-1, 3.55 ERA) on Sunday.

IPFW split its last conference series with Oakland a weekend ago, but has lost 12 of its last 14 games. The Mastodons in 2009 have scored 32 first inning runs, but the tallies tail off as the game goes on.

Leading IPFW offensively is Chris Gottschall, who is hitting .336 with 18 doubles, a triple and seven home runs. Leading the pitching staff for the Mastodons is Samuel Walker, who has a 3.70 ERA, but is 0-3 in 10 starts.

Following the series with IPFW, Centenary will travel to North Dakota State for a series starting on Friday, May 1. The Gents will then return home for a four-game series with Southern Utah on May 7.
