Saturday, May 9, 2009

SHREVEPORT – The Centenary baseball team pounded out 25 hits and scored 14 runs in Friday nights Summit League doubleheader with Southern Utah. However, the Gents were swept by the Thunderbirds 11-4 in the first game and 14-10 in the night cap.

Game one

Despite the wind blow straight out the first four innings were an offensive struggle as both teams could only push a run across. However, in the fourth SUU broke the game open with a four run inning.

The Thunderbirds would score two more times in the sixth, while Centenary seemed to have crawled back into the game with a three-run sixth. Freshman Jeff Schaffert belted a two-run bomb and junior Cliff Shepard scored on an error to leave Centenary down only four.

SUU, meanwhile, would leave no more doubts when it scored four runs between the seventh and eight innings.

Game two

Travis Leversen scored in the first to put Centenary up early, but a six-run second left the Gents to play from behind. The T-Birds would also tack on two runs in the third and another in fourth to push their advantage up to 9-2.

Centenary showed no quit though, as it again crept back into the game with four runs between the sixth and seventh innings to only be down by three. The Thunderbirds again answered right back with a three spot in the eighth, while two runners crossed the dish in the ninth.

For the Gents senior Ricky Imperial and Leversen each went 3-for-4, while Leversen also picked up two RBIs. Junior Michael Tompkins also got in on the action when he knocked in a pair of runs.

Centenary and Southern Utah will wrap up the abbreviated series on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
