Gents Begin Postseason against Oral Roberts

SHREVEPORT – For the fifth straight year fourth seeded Centenary and top seed Oral Roberts will meet in the opening round of The Summit League Championship. The Gents will go toe-to-toe with the 11 time league champion on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in JL Johnson Stadium.


Junior Travis Leversen, whose .389 batting average during the regular season ranked second in the league, while he was near the top in hits, runs and doubles, but took the top spot in stolen bases.


Sophomores Justin Kraft and Boone Whiting led the Gents with six wins, while Kraft’s 3.68 ERA put him fifth in the conference. For the season, Kraft threw 80.2 innings, completed four games, struck out 77 and only allowed opponents to bat .269 against him.


The 28-13 Golden Eagles were led offensively by Juan Martinez, who hit 13 home runs, while Seth Furmanek parked 15 over the fence. Martinez led the team with 58 RBIs and Furmanek wasn’t far behind with 56 runs knocked in.


Following Thursday’s game, Centenary will play either Southern Utah or South Dakota State on Friday. The Gents dropped all three games to SUU, while they took 3-of-4 from the Jackrabbits to open league play.


Against SDSU, Centenary was led by Cliff Sherprd, who hit .583 with a double, triple and four RBIs. Sophomore Stephen Tromblee, meanwhile, tossed seven innings of two-run baseball, while fanning four.


Freshman Morgan Brian was the Gents’ top hitter against the T-Birds, as he was 4-for-8 with a double and three runs knocked in. Whiting got the no decision in his start against SUU, as he went 5.2 innings, allowed two runs and sat down seven batters.
