Friday, May 22, 2009

TULSA, Okla. – Senior Tim Deering and junior Travis Leversen each had three hits, but the Centenary baseball team left 11 men on base in the elimination game of The Summit League Championship against South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits defeated the Gents 7-3 in extra innings.

Centenary jumped on the board in the second inning and then added one more in third to take a 2-0 lead. SDSU, meanwhile, would tie the game in the fourth and then would take a short-lived lead in the sixth.

In the bottom of the seventh Leversen came up and tied the game with an RBI to right field. The Gents had a chance to take the lead in that same inning when Tim Deering doubled, which brought junior Michael Tompkins around from second but the relay throw from right field was on target to get Tompkins out at home.

Caleb Thielbar threw a 10 inning complete game for SDSU, as he scattered 12 hits, allowed three runs, walked two and struck out 12. Sophomore Boone Whiting went nine innings and got the no decision, while classmate Justin Kraft pitched the final inning and took the loss after giving up four runs.

The loss completes the 2009 season for Centenary, and it will begin the 2010 campaign in February.
