SHREVEPORT—The Centenary volleyball team has been practicing for a few weeks and is anxious to see what its roster of 12 players, featuring 11 newcomers, can do against an opponent. The time has come to find out as the Ladies kick off their season on Friday at the Comfort Suites Sam Houston Invitational in Huntsville, Texas.

Centenary will be featured in the first match of the two-day event as the Ladies will battle Drake at 9 a.m. on Friday. Later that afternoon, Centenary will take on the host Sam Houston State squad at 2 p.m. Saturday’s schedule pits the Ladies against Wisconsin-Green Bay at 9 a.m. before concluding their participation in the tournament at 2 p.m. with Ball State.

Centenary’s lone returner from last year’s team is senior Ashlee Freeman. Freeman looks to provide some leadership to a squad that is the youngest in the NCAA Division I ranks this season with 10 freshmen and a sophomore transfer, Bethany Kern.

Freeman is Centenary’s all-time leader in total blocks (273) and block assists (236). She also ranks in the top 10 in block solos (37), service aces (81), kill attempts (2,409), and kills (913). She tops the categories for most block assists in a single match (11) and a season (89) in addition to making the top 10 in five other single-season rankings.

Kern, a transfer from the University of New Orleans, will also be able to bring some on-the-court experience to the Ladies rotation. She helped the Privateers to a 16-16 record and a 10-8 mark in Sun Belt Conference play in 2007. She was second on the team with 254 digs and was third with 25 aces.
