Late Goal by SFA Dooms Ladies
Saturday, August 30, 2008

Nacogdoches, Texas – Centenary women’s soccer freshman Deb Hill had another shutout going, but with 24 minutes left Brenna Crockett of Stephen F. Austin was able to score the only goal of the match for a 1-0 win Friday night.

The first half was a stale mate, thanks in part to Hill’s outstanding play, as she made seven saves. The Ladies offense did have three shots during the first 45 minutes, led by senior Tracy Apgar and freshmen Ashley Dolezel and Katie Valdez.

Both teams continued to play tight into the second period, but neither team would give way. SFA (1-1) was able to score on a shot to the lower 90 by Crockett, whose goal came from 10 yards out.

Centenary (1-1) had a chance to tie the match on an opportunity by freshman Chelsea Granger, but her shot was stopped on a diving save by Courtney Bauder. With just a few seconds left, the Ladies again had a chance to even the score, but Mattie Weatherspoon’s header went high.

“I thought we played well tonight,” said head coach Chase Wooten. “SFA is a heck of a team and we hung with them all the way. We came out of this game better than we did going in, and I feel very confident in our teams chances the rest of the way.”

Centenary’s next action will be on Friday, Sept. 5, against Arkansas State starting at 7 p.m. on Mayo field.
