Ladies Lose a Thriller on Mayo Field
Friday, September 5, 2008

SHREVEPORT – The Centenary and Arkansas State women’s soccer teams played a tightly contested match on Friday night. However, the Ladies came up just a little short falling to the Red Wolves, 3-2, on Mayo Field.

The first half did not see a single goal scored, but 43 seconds in the new period Arkansas State’s Kara Nitti hit from 20-yards out to break the tie. The Red Wolves (3-0) extended their advantage by two 15 minutes later, and that’s all it took for the Centenary offense to be woken up.

The Ladies (1-2) first goal was scored on a freshman Katie Valdez corker kick, as classmate Amada Exford put her head on the ball to nail her first collegiate goal. Just a minute and a half later Valdez tied the game from 30-yards out, after taking possession of a 50-50 ball.

However, with just over five minutes left Anna Kaloghirou broke the tie from inside five yards, which proved to be the game-winner. Centenary, meanwhile, again had two prime opportunities to tie the match, but freshmen Ashley Dolezel and Chelsea Granger’s shots hit the crossbar and went high.

Defensively freshman Deb Hill and junior Kate Donnelly combined for four saves, while their counterpart Megan Stoltzfus also had four stops. On the other end of the field Valdez finished the match with game-high six shots.

The next action for Centenary will be on Sunday against Arkansas-Little Rock beginning at 1 p.m.
