Ladies Split Final Day at UCA Classic

CONWAY, Ark.—The Centenary volleyball team split its Saturday matches at the UCA Classic to finish in third place in the five-team tournament with a 2-2 record. The Ladies lost 3-0 to Houston Baptist in the morning before rebounding to defeat Mississippi Valley State by a 3-0 score in the afternoon. Ashlee Freeman was named to the All-Tournament Team for her strong play throughout the weekend.

 

Centenary (2-6) got off to a slow start offensively on Saturday in the loss to Houston Baptist (25-19, 25-11, 25-20). The Ladies hit -.031 for the match in committing 22 errors to only 19 kills. Meanwhile, HBU (7-1) hit .295 on the day, led by Megan Klimitchek and Jessica Barrera, who each totaled 10 kills.

 

Jenny Kunze and Brianna Kern had five kills apiece to pace Centenary. Kunze added 10 digs and Bethany Kern recorded 13 digs in the loss.

 

In the afternoon session, the Ladies got into a rhythm on offense, which resulted in 43 kills and an improved .230 attack percentage. Centenary won the match in straight sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-23) over Mississippi Valley State to claim third place.

 

Kunze again led Centenary with 14 kills, but Freeman sizzled. The senior put down seven kills on 14 attempts with no errors and added seven block assists. Kayla Tibaldo had 13 digs and four aces for the Ladies and Jaclyn Lopez handed out 37 assists.

 

Centenary will travel to Starkville, Miss., next weekend to take part in another tournament, this one hosted by Mississippi State.
