SHREVEPORT—The Centenary volleyball team opens its 2008 Summit League schedule this weekend with a pair of road matches. The Ladies will travel to Indianapolis for a Friday 7 p.m. match at IUPUI before arriving in Macomb, Ill., on Saturday to face off with Western Illinois at 7 p.m.

Centenary (2-9, 0-0 Summit) has showed signs of quick improvement despite its young roster of 10 freshmen and 11 newcomers. The Ladies took the first set off of Mississippi State on its own court last weekend before losing the tightly contested match and also took a set from Southland powerhouse Central Arkansas.

The Ladies continue to lead The Summit League in service aces per set at 1.49, spear-headed by sophomore Bethany Kern and freshman Kinsey Mims, who rank first and fourth in the conference individually. Mims also places fourth in hitting percentage (.289) and Kern sits in fourth in digs per set (4.00). Freshman Brianna Kern leads the Maroon and White with 83 kills on the season.

IUPUI (7-5, 0-0 Summit) is fresh off of a 3-2 win over Butler on Tuesday. The Jaguars lead the league in digs per set at 18.26 in large part to the play of Chelsea Bastin and Shari Bernhardt. The defensive duo ranks third and seventh in The Summit League in digs. Offensively, Lauran Thompson paces IUPUI with 116 kills, which is fourth in the conference.

Western Illinois (4-8, 0-0 Summit) defeated Chicago State on Tuesday, 3-0, to end a five-match losing streak. The Westerwinds place fourth or fifth as a team in every major statistical category within the conference except digs. WIU sits in second on that list at 17.24 digs per set. Elise Crnjak is tops in The Summit League in digs per set at 4.82.
